U.S. Ambassador Highlights Jewish Heritage During Visit to Ancient Susya Synagogue
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee visited the ancient Susya archaeological site on October 18, highlighting Jewish history and biblical heritage during the inaugural Judea Conference.
The gathering, hosted by the Hebron Hills Regional Council and council head Eliram Azulay, brought together government ministers, Knesset members and several hundred participants. Local leaders described Huckabee’s appearance as the first visit to the site by a serving U.S. ambassador.
During a ceremony at the approximately 1,500-year-old Byzantine-era synagogue, Huckabee unveiled an ancient stone that once formed part of the façade of its Torah Ark. A choir wearing garments modeled on ancient Levitical attire performed Psalms.
In his keynote address, Huckabee emphasized the connection between the region’s archaeological remains and biblical history. He also highlighted a new visitor center intended to introduce international visitors to the site.
Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli urged stronger public engagement with the history of Jewish communities in the region. Conference sessions addressed antisemitism, Israeli sovereignty and international relations, while participants toured the ancient site.
