AMARILLO, Texas — A Texas family is moving through the adoption process for a third time, highlighting the role kinship care can play in keeping children connected to relatives and siblings during difficult circumstances.

The McPhillips family is currently navigating its third adoption overall and its second through kinship care, according to KFDA NewsChannel 10. Kinship care places children who cannot safely remain with their parents with relatives or trusted family connections rather than caregivers they do not already know.

Saint Francis Ministries highlighted the family's experience while discussing the importance of maintaining family relationships during foster care. The family's current placement allows them to maintain their relationship with their grandchild while helping preserve the bond among three siblings.

Kim McPhillips said keeping children within the family can help them stay connected to their roots and know they remain loved and cared for. The family also noted that the process requires significant paperwork, home visits and other requirements associated with foster care and adoption.

Child-welfare professionals say reunification with parents remains the primary goal when it can be accomplished safely. When that is not possible, kinship care can provide children with familiar relationships and continued connections to their extended families.

For families of faith, the story highlights the importance of providing children with stability, care and strong family relationships during uncertain circumstances.
