BEIRUT — The arrest of a Kurdish Evangelical pastor during a visit to Syria has raised concerns about the security and religious freedom of Christians as the country continues through a period of political transition.

Pastor Nihad Hassan, who leads a Kurdish Evangelical congregation in Beirut, Lebanon, traveled with his family to Syria during the summer.

While in Afrin in July, Hassan was stopped by plainclothes security personnel and taken into custody.

According to Christianity Today, Hassan was accused of apostasy and inciting religious hatred. A Syrian official cited by AFP said authorities detained him over allegations involving religious hatred on social media.

Hassan was held for more than two weeks before being released in early August. He subsequently returned to Lebanon.

His case has drawn attention to the situation facing Christians and converts from Islam in Syria, particularly as the country's transitional authorities seek to establish security following years of war and political upheaval.

Syria's transitional government has publicly pledged to protect the country's religious and ethnic minorities. However, Christians and other minority communities continue to express concerns about sectarian violence and the influence of Islamist factions.

Hassan has distinguished between the government's stated policies and the actions Christians may encounter locally. He indicated that the official position of authorities may not always reflect the behavior of individual actors on the ground.

Despite his detention, Hassan has said he intends to return to Syria and continue supporting Kurdish Christians there.

His experience illustrates the uncertainty facing Christian communities as Syria attempts to rebuild its institutions and establish protections for its diverse religious population.

For Christians watching developments in the region, Hassan's case also highlights the importance of religious freedom — including the ability to worship, share one's faith and change religious beliefs without fear of detention or persecution.
